Trial Keys

Introduction

A trial key lets you build and test against the real APIs before full access is enabled. It works on every endpoint of the Public Company API and the Private Data API, but only over a fixed sample of the data, the trial catalog. Requests are otherwise identical: same URLs, parameters, response shapes, rate limit and monthly record quota.

Who gets one

• Any paid plan without API access can create one trial key, from the API tab of the account page. Accounts with API access create full keys instead.
• A trial key expires after 1 or 3 months, chosen when you create it.
• It stops working if the account moves to the free plan.
• It never becomes a full key. When full access is enabled, create a full key and switch to it.

What the catalog contains

On the Public Company API, aggregated group data is available for the Cybersecurity vertical only, with no other filters.

How requests behave

• Naming something outside the catalog fails the whole request with 403 CATALOG_RESTRICTED. That covers a path id (/companies/{id}, /investors/{id}, /transactions/{id} and their sub-resources), an id filter, or a SKU or multiples_id on the Public Company API. details.ids lists the refused ids.
• Lists, sub-resources, profiles and aggregates are limited to the catalog. A list without an id filter returns matching catalog records only. A company's deal activity, an investor's stats, investments, co-investors and portfolio, and transaction aggregates count catalog deals only.
• Resolve only finds catalog records. A company or investor outside the catalog comes back as no_match, or is left out of candidates.
• Lookups are not restricted. /lookup/* returns the full filter vocabulary.

If the catalog is being rebuilt, requests briefly return 403 CATALOG_RESTRICTED with The trial catalog is not ready yet. Try again shortly.
